Including absolute novices will rapidly be climbing protected Peak District rock faces on this two-day program. Attendees will master securing the rope, safety techniques and several methods of ascent, plus abseiling down. With a maximum of six participants to a single guide, there is plenty of individual attention and custom goals. The training is suitable for anyone over the age of 13 and over, ranging from absolute beginners to those with limited gym climbing background. This is a non-accommodation course, but you can find a selection of suggested, affordable places to stay nearby, featuring campgrounds, hostels, B&Bs and inns. The training centre is a brief walk from Bamford railway station, located on the rail route from Manchester to Sheffield.

This historic hillside village, a ancient town in Andalucía, approximately a short drive from Granada, is the inspiring location for this painting holiday. Artists of all abilities – including beginners – will discover how to conceive and execute abstract artworks. Part of the schedule will be spent in the open air, working on guided exercises in the open. These charcoal drawings and paintings will then be worked on in the studio, with attendees creating several abstract landscapes in acrylic paint to be displayed in the village. Participants has sole use of the venue, which is built around an open courtyard and has a sun terrace with panoramic vistas over the hills. The fee encompasses five days’ painting tuition; all meals; and an outing to the nearby fortress and additional points of interest.

This sun-drenched foodie getaway, based at a villa by the river in the inland Portuguese region, is draws inspiration from the plant-based cuisine of celebrated cooks. Attendees will learn to produce selection of small dishes, take part in a hands-on falafel session, refine mid-morning meals such as shakshuka, and make substantial main courses like a rich mushroom stew and moussaka. The schedule includes trips to the local market and a nearby winery to taste Portuguese wines, combined with free time for walks by the Funcho River, to relax on the deck or take a dip in the infinity pool. The accommodation, a renovated rural property, has five bedrooms, plus glamping tents in the grounds.

This energetic camp is an energizing, inclusive weekend dance intensive for adults in High Wycombe. The format throughout the camp is a party-style warm-up session, then several 90-minute classes covering various urban dance forms, then an 60-minute jam to demonstrate those solos. Participants are split into levels according to ability and experience, so it is suitable for those who are completely new to popping and locking, all the way to experienced performers or instructors. This event doesn’t include accommodation but there are a number of places to stay within walking distance, and it is 23-35 minutes by rail into London.

St Ives is the perfect spot for a maritime music retreat. Guests will be taught historic sailing songs from a folk singer and vocal coach, and have a go at writing their own. There will be voice exercises, breath control techniques, stagecraft advice and a final evening concert. The retreat is held in a rural hotel overlooking St Ives Bay. All meals are provided, such as a Cornish cream tea on the first day, breakfast options, lunches to go and three-course dinners. Grog, alas, is not provided. Author and tutor Greg Mosse runs the regular sessions on this writing retreat. He covers everything from story structure, characters, setting and tension, to submitting work to publishers. Greg’s wife, the bestselling author Kate Mosse, will co-host special sessions at the start and finish of the week. The holiday is based at a traditional complex in Vamos at the foot of the White mountains – 10 private accommodations are set around a garden and pool (companions are encouraged to share). The Centre for Alternative Technology near Machynlleth runs a host of programs covering sustainability: from creating habitats to upcycling. This weekend introduction will help attendees get to grips with the fundamentals of beekeeping, study the biology of honeybees and discover their ecological importance. It is aimed at produce “bee-friendly beekeepers”. The weekend is also a opportunity to relax in the organization's carefully maintained forests, which are home to polecats, otters, dormice, lesser horseshoe bats and rare birds. These recently launched summer sailing weekends are spent on Wayfarers and Dufours on the estuary in Essex. They are designed for adult beginners starting out or those with some knowledge who want a refresher. Sailors can improve their helming, build their nautical skills and work towards the Royal Yachting Association’s certification levels in a supportive atmosphere. There are non-residential and overnight options, staying in basic shared rooms in the waterside sailing school.
