At least 64 people were killed in a law enforcement action cracking down on the organized crime group in the Brazilian city's northern suburbs - the most extensive and fatal action in the region's records.

Four law enforcement personnel lost their lives during the security mission in the communities of Alemão and Penha, local authorities reported. Over 80 individuals were taken into custody.

Intense confrontations erupted when approximately 2,500 law enforcement officers entered the area on Tuesday morning. The Comando Vermelho reacted using gunfire, burning barricades and using drone-dropped explosives, authorities stated.

The International human rights organization stated it felt "horrified" by the law enforcement raid, urging "immediate and thorough inquiries".

The slum neighborhoods near Rio's airport is seen as the main base of a major criminal organizations.

Local authorities confirmed a minimum of 50 of the deceased were "identified by authorities as alleged offenders".

Numerous individuals were hurt, including civilians caught in the crossfire.

Community Response

Locals have compared the mountainous region - inhabited by approximately 300,000 people - to a "combat area" since the mission commenced.
