For Bellingham to hopes to earn his place into the English strongest team, the smart move to eliminate the nonsense. His response when he saw that he was going up after an evening of inconsistency in Tirana fell short of expectations.
"I’d rather not make more out of it but I stand by my words 'attitude matters' and respect towards the teammates who enter the game," Tuchel said. "Decisions are made and you have to accept it being a professional."
Bellingham has to learn. There was no call for a tantrum. Harry Kane had only moments earlier made it the Three Lions two goals ahead in an inconsequential qualifier, there were six minutes left and the player, following an inconsistent display, had just been booked for fouling the Albanian striker. This could scarcely be called a controversial substitution. Indeed it would have been foolish for the manager to leave Bellingham on considering there was a risk the midfielder would rule himself out of the first match of the competition by picking up a another booking.
However, the player turned the spotlight on himself. There was no disguising the young midfielder's annoyance upon understanding that he was going to make way for a teammate. He flung his arms in the air and while he shook Tuchel’s hand while heading to the sideline it was obvious that Tuchel did not appreciate it.
This is the challenge for Bellingham. He praised his teammate for providing the assist for the captain to head in his second of the night, but everything else was self-defeating. It's not like protesting was going to change Tuchel’s mind. The coach has repeatedly emphasized respecting team hierarchies and the importance of behaving correctly.
He, not included in the previous squad, has been under scrutiny after returning to the squad recently. Practically his place has been in question and his actions haven't benefited him through his behavior to coming off the pitch as the national team wrapped up a ideal group stage by defeating a spirited effort from the Albanian team.
It means it's unclear on how the team function at their best when Bellingham plays. The evidence here was open to interpretation. There was experimentation from Tuchel early on. Under him, England have gained England organization and direction lately, employing a No 6, a central midfielder, a playmaker and dedicated wide players, but it felt different against Albania. Quansah was handed his international debut, Adam Wharton started for the first time internationally and the use of John Stones as a part-time midfielder gave a similar look to City's team that won three trophies.
His performance was inconsistent. He created an opportunity for his teammate during the second half but at times seemed overly eager to shine. There were a lot of poorly executed passes. An unnecessary confrontation with an Albania midfielder early on. England's play was messy for much of the second half. One Albania chance came after Bellingham gave the ball away. The yellow card occurred when he was dispossessed to Broja and fouled Broja.
Ultimately England’s depth was decisive. The coach brought on the Manchester City player, who looked more naturally fitted to the role in which Bellingham operated earlier in the match, and the Arsenal winger. Eventually Saka provided a corner kick for Kane to break the deadlock. This served as a reminder that dead-ball situations will be crucial in the upcoming tournament.
Nevertheless, Bellingham was the story. The brilliance of Rashford’s assist for Kane's goal was somewhat overlooked amid the drama of the substitution incident. At the end, the focus was on Bellingham. Tuchel came over to his side and guided Bellingham towards the English fans. Their connection remains intact. The coach isn't ready to abandon him at this stage. However, whether he is willing to give him a starring role is still uncertain.
