Three members of law enforcement were killed and at least 15 additional individuals got wounded in what appears to be premeditated blast caused by gas at a rural property in northern Italy.

How It Happened

The explosion took place as police and firefighters approached the property close to Verona to carry out an eviction order for three siblings who were older adults.

The three deceased individuals served in the Italian military police.

Legal Proceedings

Two individuals were arrested at the scene and one more individual who ran away after the incident was found soon after. All three have been admitted to the hospital.

The detonation could be noticed some 5km (3 miles) away and images from the scene showed the structure turned into a heap of debris.

“We are in a period of mourning,” commented Interior Minister Matteo Piantedosi, who added that previous tries had been made to remove the three siblings in the earlier times.

Property Situation

The president of the Veneto region, President Zaia, stated the residence was under an court order due to financial obligations accrued by the three owners.

Negotiators had been assigned to engage the brothers and sister who had barricaded themselves into the property. When the Carabinieri reached the location just after 03:00 (01:00 GMT), officials think one of the residents caused the blast.

“When we entered the property, we faced an utterly insane act,” regional commander Claudio Papagno told the media.

A gas canister had been ignited, and the blast immediately struck our personnel,” he added.

Molotov cocktails were also discovered at the residence, the Interior Minister said.

Casualties and Damage

The wounded by the incident consisted of 11 other members of the police force as well as a trio of personnel of the state police and a emergency responder.

As stated by the prosecuting attorney, the property was in a poor condition and had was without power.

He was convinced the detonation had taken place on a story above the access point and stated to journalists it was a “intentional and planned killing”. Shortly before the explosion, he said officers had “heard a whistle, probably the gas cylinders being activated”.

Local Response

“Everyone was aware the circumstances were severe,” neighbors informed local news, noting that the family members had in the past stated to “blow themselves up” rather than be evicted.

“The blast resulted in a ‘horrific, deeply distressing and tragic cost’.”

Minister of Defence Guido Crosetto united with other elected representatives in honoring the trio of personnel who had died in the performance of their duties.
