‘All those silly things – do them’: The striker’s journey from rehabilitation to goals with Athletic Bilbao

Thehe debut appearance the Athletic striker competed in England, an young representing the youth squad against Bundesliga youth at Wycombe’s stadium in fall 2015, he scored. On his next visit he played in the country, against Sunderland two months later, he netted. The third time, against Pep Guardiola’s team soon after, well, he did it once more. As he revisited to the city to take on Manchester United at the sports complex in the 2017 season, he scored again. It was a superb volley, too. “Truly,” he states, “it’s one of the best goals in my career.” Therefore the team did what they had to do: they took him off.

“I got well angry,” the attacker admits, and then he starts laughing. “I’m sure there’s footage. We traveled to face United and I was in fine form. They didn’t let me play the second half: my contract wasn’t finalized deal, I kept finding the net, speculation was rife, as you’d expect. I don’t know about the Magpies’ pursuit, but I recall seeing about Man United, the typical thing. It’s unclear if it was accurate, but had they contacted me, my desire was to remain at Athletic. I feel lucky to be here.”

Real Sociedad release pressure with surreal victory in Basque derby like no other

At the training ground, the Basque Country, the day’s first practice is about to start; after it, the short journey to Loiu and another trip to England, on this occasion to face Newcastle in the UCL on the upcoming match. Mentioning that phrase lights him up. It’s turning out to be a difficult season for Athletic, partially owing to the demands of competing at this level. Losing in stoppage time in the weekend clash, they have won only one of their recent league fixtures and been defeated by Arsenal and the German side in the continental stage. But, consider the broader view, the big nights he has lived and upcoming events, and he feels a calm gratitude about him.

In the the period since he had come back to Athletic, the striker has been a semi-final participant, prevented from reaching a domestic final by United, and has traveled on a traditional boat up the Nervión estuary flanked by a million fans after lifting the trophy, the first title in 40 years. Currently he stands as the top goal-getter in the European competition, where they are distinctive and debuting in a decade. “This was beyond my dreams,” he says.

He considered it difficult enough just to make the first team and that proved true. As the child of the former Real Sociedad player the former professional and a regular attendee at the club that are now his rivals, Gorka is from the Antiguoko academy, the Donostiarra team that developed the coach, Xabi Alonso and Andoni Iraola. He joined Athletic at seventeen but after his top-level debut in August 2018, he experienced a torn cruciate, the cut, a demotion and a recall before he could truly get a chance, coming back aged 26 to live the best days of the club’s history.

Gorka Guruzeta in training
Gorka Guruzeta is preparing to face Newcastle in the Champions League.

“You go into the academy thinking you won’t reach the senior squad but every phase you advance through you’re still there and you can observe the approach. You get there but … departure is necessary.” He featured briefly in six matches in six games between his bow and early 2019. “Subsequently I returned to the filial [Bilbao Athletic, the Under-23s]. Several appearances with them and my knee gave way.

“It was a huge blow but In retrospect as something positive because it shifted the way I saw things. Healing from a serious ailment is difficult, but it aids growth. You develop habits you didn’t have. It’s not about neglect, but I would go to training and then head home, typical youth behavior. In the facility, facilities are comprehensive, so take full advantage. Work, precaution. Get in the gym. If your hips aren’t balanced, work on that. Assuming ankle mobility is good, improve it more. Every small aspect: do them.

“In the first team you’re going to collide with opponents who have crashed into players 200,000 times. They’re so strong. I look at photos of me before: I had slender legs. Thus incidents occur. Look at pictures of me now and the change is dramatic. Recovery revealed that. Practice concludes, but additional work remains. Everyone else is ready, really ready; no exceptions.”

You also have to play. He left in tears in the pandemic season, aged 23, dropping into the second division. During his Sabadell spell in that season, he scored three times in numerous matches. At Amorebieta in the second half of 2021-22, the he found his form. “Many experience this: transfers, releases. With a turnaround, work, believe, and should the time come the requirement appears where you play, a return could happen. Readiness is vital. When they decided to call again, it was a dream come true. The trophy success, European football, and qualify for Europe’s top tier … pfff.”

Understandably he remarks savor the moment. All the more so after the previous season which, at times, was involved suffering. Previously the main threat with 16 in 2023-24, he managed seven in {15 games more|additional matches|
